Introduction
Cyber security breaches and attacks are on the rise for organisations of all sizes and sectors. According to the latest Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2024, published by the Department for science, innovation & technology, half of businesses (50%) and around a third of charities (32%) reported having experienced some form of cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months. This is a significant increase to 2023 where 32% of businesses and 24% of charities were affected. The most common type of breach or attack was phishing (84% of businesses and 83% of charities), followed by impersonation (35% of businesses and 37% of charities) and malware (17% of businesses and 14% of charities).
Serious consequences for organisations
These breaches and attacks can have serious consequences for organisations, affecting their reputation, productivity, and profitability. The survey estimates that the single most disruptive breach from the last 12 months cost each business, of any size, an average of approximately £1,205. For medium and large businesses, this was approximately £10,830. For charities, it was approximately £460.
